Originally intended as a sign for a designated smoking area, as contrasted to ? No Smoking Symbol. This is illustrated in Samsung’s previous design of a stylized, white cigarette on a blue background.
Cigarette was approved as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010 under the name “Smoking Symbol” and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.
